You can do this after 7:13pm and before the morning rush but not on the express trains, and don't be such an ass (
sighing loudly/making a big dramatic production over moving it) when someone politely asks you to move it so they can sit. Unless you bought a ticket for your bag, keep it in your lap.

If you don't want someone to sit beside you then drive yourself. Otherwise become friends with the fact that you ride PUBLIC transit and the seats belong to people who pay.
I love this pic. It reminds me of the episode of the simpsons when principal skinners mother is riding the bus. I can't quite remember all the details but someone asks if they can sit next to her, to which she replies "oh! No dear. This seats for my change purse'. As soon as they walk away, she puts it on her lap. She just didn't want those dirty turnips sitting next to her.
I know that Simpsons episode. Loves it!
