Victim

As I drove home from the GO Station tonight, a warning message flashed in the driver's information area of the dash of my Chevrolet Equinox.

TIGHTEN GAS CAP

This puzzled me and then I noticed my fuel gauge. On Sunday, I filled my car. My tank holds 69 litres of gas, enough to drive 598 km. Tonight, my fuel gauge showed I had less than a quarter of a tank left. I've only driven 62 km this week.

Turns out, I'm a victim of gas siphoning. Someone siphoned close to 50 litres of gas from my tank while it sat parked in the GO lot. It's the only conclusion I can come to. My tank had over three quarters of fuel this morning.

It's time to bring back locking gas caps.

Jerk.

Why on earth woudl anyone sell a car without locking gas caps????

Also, it might be worth letting GO know... I don't know what they in the way of CCTV, but I would be surprised if you were the only one targetted.

I reported it to GO Transit.
As of last night, I was the only car owner to make such a claim.

That sucks large! What a bunch of filthy bastard turnips!!!

Mike tells me you can get a locking cap from your GM dealer. Then you will be assured it meets all the emission requirements, as well as keep your gas in Your tank! Of course Canadian Tire also sells them at aprox 15 bucks, but they may not meet the emission requirements. Good Luck!

The good news is that when I buy a car, I will now ask the question "does it have a locking gas tank cap", whereas previously I would not have asked. So, your blog may have helped prevent future thefts :-)

So sorry to hear about your incident. I do not have a lock cap on my vehicle either. Used to on my last car.
It should be mandatory for all vehicles to have them.
I am going to go see my GM dealer and ask to have one installed.

Thanks Camilla

I smeared Anusol all over the cap on the weekend as a temporary measure. I can guarantee you if someone doesn't know what something is, they won't touch it and Anusol, which one smears over their rectum for hemorrhoids, stings if it gets in the eyes or on abrasions in the skin. Plus it's slippery and hard to clean off.

Locking gas caps appear to be a must because since I wrote this, 7 people came forward to GO about reported gas theft at Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax.

I was told this in not an unusual crime!

My car is similar to yours (same home company, different make). My gas "door" locks when the car is locked. If I get out of my car at the gas station and accidentally lock my door (habit), I can't get into the gas cap without first unlocking the whole car (not just the driver's side door). I wonder why the home company didn't use this feature on all their cars???
