Cyclist struck and killed by GO Train
Source: Toronto SunONTARIO - A 54-year-old cyclist was struck and killed by a passenger train in north Scarborough just after the dinner-hour Tuesday.
Toronto Police say the woman was riding west along the sidewalk on the north side of Finch Ave. E., east of Kennedy Rd., when she was hit by the Go train.
"Our initial reports suggest the train crossing arms came down and she circumvented them," Sgt. Tim Burrows, of Traffic Services, said Tuesday night.

i'm with you girl. how did she not see it? and not even notice the arms come down or even hear the whistle? let alone the noise of the train!!! had to be an ipod...
i mean this is just awful for her family and hopefully her death won't be for nothing and other people will try to pay attention more!
I think the main problem is that when a train is coming directly towards you, it's very hard to judge the speed. These incidents often happen because someone looks up the line, sees that the train is far away, and then think they have enough time to cross.
What I would like to see is breakdown of persons-hit-by-trains into (1) trespass (2) deliberately breaking level crossing rules and (3) accidentally breaking level crossing rules. I bet 1 and 2 are much bigger than 3.
There was a news article this week out of quebec, after 3 kids were killed by a train. The main premise was people cannot judge the speed of trains.
