Busted Mini

On Friday, I showed a series of photos of people parked at the Oshawa GO lot, who despite parking available, chose to park illegally.

One driver in particular, owner of a Mini Cooper, was busted at 12:39 pm, hours after the infractions were called out on this website. Don't feel bad. Like I said, there were plenty of spots available.

Rick, who sent in the original photos, sent in what he saw Friday night on his walk back to his car.

Busted.

Says Rick, "Don't get me wrong, I don't like getting tickets either, but these people aren't special and if I have to play by the rules and park properly, so should them. The point is to park where it's legal and safe to do so. When the lot's full, the chore is just being able to park. When the lot is empty, there's no excuse for this. It's laziness.

just like people take pics of ttc drivers texting or sleeping, taking pics of people parking and posting them is wrong. i think i read somewhere that citizen journalism doesn't help fix situations but only creates hostility and resentment. are you trying to escalate this to a point where people who read this site begin to vandalize these cars? clearly what you're doing is immoral. you ought to be ashamed.

It's not really "immoral" to post photos of peoples cars, it's more of an ethics issue over moral. But there's no right to privacy for ones car in a public place or parking lot. If the specifics have been removed or blurred (plate, etc) it could be anyone's car. And if one does something stupid like park like a fruit loop, why not out them.

But I do at times question the ethicalness of some of the candid photos people take of each other and post on this site.

Er, do you see PEOPLE in these photos?

I would think that if someone were to choose to vandalize a vehicle parked illegally that would happen due to a lack of restraint from that person and not because they saw a photo on a website. I don't encourage anyone to deface property.

Comparing calling out people for parking cars badly to publicly-paid, professional drivers risking commuters' lives while driving distracted in traffic is a bit far-fetched, don't you think?

Trust me, if the photos encourage enforcement, I'm all for it or else I'll just go park my CUV down near the station's bus loop, on the sidewalk. Is that okay with you? If I did that, I would expect it would piss off people as well as earn me a ticket. Should I not expect such a reaction?

On Flickr, there are several photos, all public, where the authors make no attempt to blur faces of people doing strange and stupid things on GO trains or of people just enjoying the ride because they happen to be in the background of the photo's subject.

For me, I'm all about "from the neck down". People email me full photos and I crop them. At first, I wasn't keen on pictures but over time I learned they do help illustrate a story and a little effort to eliminate faces helps to ease the anxiety.

There's a picture of me in a crowd in a publicity shot for an air show. I was in a public place. I can't control who is photographing what. On Google maps, both my car and my husband's car can be seen parked in the driveway of our previous home.

In my personal photo albums, there are pictures of people standing behind pictures of my daughter at the CNE, on trips, at national landmarks, etc who I don't know. I can imagine that millions of people own photos that show people they don't know and who they never asked permission to photograph. Do we blur out their faces?

How does one draw the line?

Some of you just analyze this site way too much. Here's the thing, if you disagree, how about you take action to correct the parking issues at the lots, since bitching about a method that appears to be working is offensive to you.

I've written numerous letters demanding GO at least enforce the rules or patrol the lots. I pay for VIP parking and many mornings show up to have someone in my spot. GO doesn't listen. Maybe this will be the "ticket" since now someone's watching.

This site shows photographic evidence of the problem, especially considering there are CCTV cameras at this location.

*** there are NO CCTV cameras at Oshawa. Please note my error.

Re: photos.

Provided faces can't be seen or are in profile, what's the issue?

I think it's amazing how many people like to dictate how this blog should be run. I think it's fine the way it is. Isn't your participation voluntary?

If you don't like it, start your own website. What would it be about? Would it be about how not to complain about shitty parking and annoying fellow passengers? Do you think anyone would read it?

Personally, I enjoy this site and all the assholishness it delivers. Keep up the good work.

Maybe the people bitching are the same jackasses that feel that they can park wherever they like? Hmmmm....
