Commuting circa 1967

I've nicknamed the lady on the right whose giving the photographer of this photo the evil eye "Harriet". Doesn't she look like a Harriet!?

Check out the CSA! White gloves and pillbox hat.

And did you spot the smoker? There's no ventilation in that coach. Yuck.

If you want to see more pictures like this, GO has a library on their official Facebook page.

  1. And look, no feet or bags on seats.

  2. I *think* this is actually a publicity shot done by GO, and the people there are employees posing for the photo rather than actual passengers.
I like the white gloves on the "hostess" (as they were then called...)

As for smoking... on British trains, smoking carriages were widespread even 15 years ago, but by 10 years ago had mostly died out. (It's now illegal to smoke on a train in the UK).

  3. Those tin cans, based on the TTC subway car design, were apparently very uncomfortable for longer rides. AMT in Montreal got a lot of 'em when they retired from GO, and ONR runs their Northlander out of Toronto Union Station with 'em.

  4. Nothing unusual about smoking on a train in the '60s. When I first started nursing in the late '80s, nurses and physicians were smoking in the nursing station, and patients smoked in their rooms. Hard to imagine.
