Food ... new poll coming ...

So I'm curious, how many of you eat breakfast?

This is a serious question so put down your phone, close your office door (if you have one) and let's chat. I've been trying so hard to eat before I leave in the mornings but eating at 6 am is proving difficult. I feel like we're all friends now so we can have conversations like this.

I have also noticed that it's rare to see people eat on the train in the morning. It seems more commonplace to have people eat during the evening rush.

I'm stumped at what would be a good food for morning commutes. Something that isn't a pastry. Something that doesn't smell.

This leads me to fruit. I hate the smell of bananas (I have numerous posts on this). The smell of oranges also drives me batty.

Nuts? My mother suggested I eat a handful of almonds each morning.

I'm up for suggestions. I've been told this will help me in my quest to develop a more healthy lifestyle.

Breakfast is such an easy meal to skip.

Don't write that this post is boring ... I enjoy the thoughtfulness some people put into their answers and most of you are an intelligent bunch. Most of us who ride the GO train are.

  1. I think grapes and berries are good train food, they are bite-size and do not really smell. This is always my back-up breakfast if I am running late .. if I don't eat in the morning I get really cranky and moody, haha. :(

  2. I absolutely cannot eat before 7am. It's something that I cannot bring myself to do. But, on those occasions when Mom was over and forced something into me, it was normally a half glass of milk and a piece of toast with peanut butter on it.

This is something that you can do before leaving the house, or even munch on on the way to the station.

  3. Do you own a Magic Bullet? If not go buy one. They are awesome! I can't eat before 7 but since breakfast really is the most important meal of the day I force myself. And I make the best smoothies ever at home and drink on the train ride in. My smoothies contain strawberries, kiwis, bananas ir your fave fruit, plus POM juice and OJ, a yogurt and sometimes a scoop of protein power. I also toss in some chia seeds - natures miracle seed which contains fibre, protein and just about anything else your body needs!! The sooner you eat after waking, the better.

  4. I make breakfast bars, the recipe is easy, and I eat them in my car on the way to the station, along with my green tea.

  5. Robert emailed me and suggested I eat a protein the morning. Like cheese. Those BabyBels are portable. I like the idea of grapes and homemade cereal bars. Smoothies ... see, now I have options.

  6. I have granola cereal with a yoghurt cup (however, I wait until I get to the office to dig in).

  7. Cottage cheese and fruit when I get to work (or oatmeal in the winter) and a muffin a couple of hours later as a mid-morning snack.

  8. Cheese strings and an apple.

  9. I generally wait to get to the office before having breakfast. (I'm in before 7am.) I usually have oatmeal, but lately I've been enjoying Banana Nut Cheerios. I bring them in a small container and bring milk from home in a small drink container. Then I've got Nutri-Grain bars for those peckish times of the day. Gotta have the fibre in the morning!

  10. I always chug a glass of milk just before I leave the house, or if I am driving, on the way to the station. That paired with a handful or so of almonds, walnuts and raisins (I keep a small container of this mix in my purse)usually gets me through until I get in the office. Then some yogurt and granola with a fruit completes my breakfast.

  11. I grab something on the PATH and eat at my desk. I know, I'm lazy and it gets expensive but I want that extra 10 mins. in the morning. BUT (and yes, I'm serious) you can never go wrong with Pop Tarts. I think they should be classified as a food group!

  12. I find some Pom Wonderful feels great in the morning. Holds off the hunger and my stomach just feels really happy with it

  13. I peel and eat a grapefruit and get many complements for the citrus smell. Certainly not for everybody!

  14. Eat a breakfast packed wtih protein and fibre (and not sugar) and that will keep you full and satisfied. you should eat every 3 hours, so breakfast should be satisfying and then have a mid-mornign snack of fruit and then lunch and you're good to go.

Pop Tarts are disgusting and should be BANNED!! you may as well eat the box. actually the box is probably better for you. processed foods are BAD BAD BAD!!!

  15. @lswgirl13: I can only eat the Chocolate or the Smores ones. And I tend to have them for a snack or dessert after dinner. But then again, I eat them cold and in the summer its great, no extra heat in the house.

  16. I'm definitely not a breakfast person and sometimes can't even stand the smell of breakfast first thing in the morning (makes me feel like...) So..

    Yogurt shakes + chia seeds
Breakfast muffins (savoury) made the night before (or prepped the night before and baked in the morning) + chia seeds
Egg sandwiches (eggs + chia seeds)
Yogurt + Holy Crap or just chia seeds (at work)

*I often throw in some hulled hemp, ground flax seed, and or buckwheat - in any of the above (and more)

I agree that you should have some kind of protein in the morning. Keeps you full (and helps regulate the carb thing - or something like that).

I also like the idea of having dinner (leftovers) for breakfast - why not? You burn it off anyway and it's still packed with all the right 'stuff'! We have many "reverse meals" days :)

    Now I'm getting hungry...

  17. I would not recommend bringing nuts on the train:
    1) It's the most common allergen, and you could be putting someone's life in danger
    2) They are messy, you don't know how many times I've seen nutshells on the floor of the go train
    3) There are so many other options that are cleanier and less deadly for your fellow passengers

  18. I'd suggest dried fruit... no smell, very good for you, and still contains enough energy to sustain you. Plus, it doesn't matter if it gets squashed in your bag or if you don't eat it all (you can eat it the next day).
Bulk Barn has a great selection (dried mango is my favourite).

  19. One of the most important things to remember when eating on the train during any time of the day, is alot of people have severe food allergies. Severe Nut allergies are becoming more and more common. I myself am severly allergic to peanuts and commute daily into Toronto, and it is very hard especially in the mornings. Now i understand the whole "this is my breakfast & i've paid to ride the train, so i'm going to eat whatever i want" but seriously people...I being the allergic one have moved to a different car to get away from the source but I find it is happening more and more. For breakfast in the AM eating fruit (fresh or dry)in the morning is a safe bet, along with dried cereals. Smooties also work well and full the spot until you get to work. Depends on what works for you and your schedule in the morning.
