Go train ticketing

Submitted from KH

Saw the guy on your site complaining that GO doesn't ticket, just issues warnings. Well - the other morning I was coming to work after rush hour following a dr's appt. LSW train was pretty empty, 1 person to a quad. I got on at Clarkson. So this guy in the quad behind me apparently leaves from Port Credit or Long Branch, depending on the day, so he has 10-ride passes for both. This particular morning, he got on at Port Credit but accidentally punched the Long Branch pass, so paid a lesser fare than he should have. The ticket checker noticed this, asked for ID, started making notes. I thought oh, he's issuing a warning, as the guy was explaining that it was simple mistake, he grabbed the wrong pass. The cop doesn't say anything after asking for ID, is just writing, then all of a sudden tears off a sheet, says "ok, so it's a $100 ticket for not paying the full fare, you need to choose one of the options on the back within 15 days" and dude FREAKS OUT. Started yelling and swearing saying he's now done with GO for good and they've lost a rider etc. Wow. I was surprised because it did seem like an innocent mistake rather than someone deliberately not having paid anything. I did feel for him.

Something similar happened on the LSE a few weeks ago. That was completely draconian of them. The customer did pay, just not enough. So in that case, I think a warning would suffice.

They need to actually ticket those with expired passes, no passes, etc. not for a simple mistake.

Yeah, why is it always the ones who truly erred, obviously have been buying fares who get the shaft?

There's a woman in my office who brags about how long she can make a 10-ride last for. She's got 2 warnings under her belt. Then I learned of another lady in another company who forgot to tap her Presto and she got fined. No warning. Even though people on the train stood up for her and told the officer she was a regular and it was an honest mistake because she had been rushing to find a spot at Oshawa which is so crowded now. Not right!

@Melanie - Doesn't that just amaze you that someone would brag about getting away with that especially when she'd be working with other GO train'ers? Boggles the mind!
GO Train "cops" are just cop-wannabe's. I liken them to by-law officers . . . in otherwords, absolutely NO common sense!

What did the guy look like? One day last week on the way to work my boss got a ticket and he rides from one of those stations. He was livid when he got in that morning.

I submitted the story - I don't overly remember what the guy looked like (I had my back to him), just know he had dark hair... it was Thursday nov. 3 on the lsw train arriving at Union just after 10 a.m.

Most ridiculous one I ever saw - guy hasn't renewed his monthly pass (it's 4 days into the month by now) and the inspector says she'll let him off but he really must renew on time etc. The guy freaks out at this "terrible treatment" and starts shouting about it. The train is now coming into Union and he starts to loom over this admittedly small female inspector. She warns him she will call security at Union and he still keeps at it as she starts to pull out her ticket book. Believe it or not he still got off at Union without a fine..
