**Some** transit riders willing to pay extra for better service

I added "some" to this Toronto Star story headline because for all of us who board at the beginning of a line, seating isn't at a premium, so we're spoiled.

And no, I wouldn't pay more for a priority coach where I'd have a seat reserved with my name on it.

Now, if I got on at Ajax, well, that's a whole different story.

  1. Call me crazy but I drive to Oshawa and pay more in fare and in time just so I can sit and find a parking spot.

  2. Good christ, Linda! Why not just leave earlier?

  3. ...How about GO just runs more trains? Obviously the demand is there because of all those who stand on the way in.

  4. Paying more for a seat is ridiculous. Paying cover for a bar-car is a different story.

  5. OMG - people drive to Oshawa to get a parking spot?!? Hey - we're a destination for something I guess..

  6. I second the bar-car.
Wouldn't it be easier to drive to Pickering and take a train that originates there or, drive to Rouge Hill?

Linda, where in Ajax do you live because Oshawa isn't exactly next door. Plus Whitby has parking and it is possible to get a seat on the 801 (whatever the Oshawa 753 is by the time it arrives in Whitby).

  7. I wouldn't do this simply because I'd be tied to taking a specific train every day. I like having some flexibility to go into work (or leave from downtown) earlier or later.

I suppose for those with clockwork schedules it makes sense.

  8. Linda, you are crazy.

I board at Ajax, get to work early. Because I chose to take the 6.41. I have never fought for a seat on that train.

  9. Rather than a seating assigned car, can we first have a no smelling food/people/lunatics/no air con or heat/loud electronic device/door donkey car please?

  11. It's obvious GO needs to run more trains. However there's only so much capactity at Union Station. And then the bigger question, who pays for it? Higher taxes? What kind of higher taxes? User fees?

    Let the fun begin!

  12. You are crazy linda!;) Why drive so far to the Schwa when there is tons of parking in Whitby? And surely Oshawas parking lot fills up before Ajax since there aren't as many spots? What train do you catch? Ajax doesn't fill up till after 7:30.

  13. Since they added the extra morning train, I always get a seat at Ajax. Unless you're the last one boarding you generally get a seat in the morning. I catch either the 7, 7:15 or 730 train and never have to stand.

  14. Pay more??? HA, I don't get good value for what I pay now!!!

  15. I drop my daughter off at her daycare in Whitby for 7. It's impossible for me to backtrack back to Ajax and I will miss the earlier trains. I don't go to Whitby because it's hard to get out of that lot and get my kid by 6. Oshawa works because I can drive out using the bus lane and get on the highway in time to grab my daughter. My daycare contract is 7 to 6. If I ask for earlier it's more money.

  16. Hi Linda
Question, so you're willing to pay more to buy fare from Oshawa, but not pay more in childcare and just leave from Ajax?

How much more could a half hour be compared to the difference between the two fares? Surely the fare is more? Plus the added gas.

I dunno. I'm not here to tell you what to do as a working mother and I also know good daycare is hard to find but I would think you could still leave from Ajax at a time that gives you a seat and doesn't cost any more or less.
