Only downtown commuters would really appreciate this, even though it’s unrelated to transit.
Why do people who arrive last to wait for an elevator feel that they should be allowed to be the first to board?
I was just downstairs at my office building waiting for an elevator with about 15 other people, and this woman came around the corner just as the elevator arrived, never broke stride, and cut in front of about 4 other people who were about to get on the elevator and were CLEARLY closer to the open doors than she was.
I had yet to make a move towards the elevator, but it was obvious to me anyway that she should not be shoving her way to the front of the line. In fact, she should have waited for the next elevator. You could play the chivalry card...but there were about 8 other women whom this broad also deemed herself more important than.

Doesn't matter if I am the last or the first in a mass of people, I will always wait for a new elevator so that it isn't as crowded.
ReplyDeleteBut, it was rude. Nothing will change her behaviour at this point because it is probably ingrained.
@Squiggles: Same! I'd rather grab a corner in the elevator than be in the middle and have to constantly check over my shoulders to see if anyone behind/beside me needs to get off on that floor.
ReplyDeleteThis woman is probably one of those people who plant themselves right in front of the panel of buttons (so they can exit faster) causing everyone else to have to reach around them to press their floor. Rude!
ReplyDeleteSee that all the time in my building. My favourites though are the ones who stick their hand into a door that's nearly closed so they can get on the elevator. Guess it must be the last lifeboat on the Titanic.
ReplyDeleteYou could always play the "Woops, sorry I had my foot out and tripped you" card.
ReplyDelete@ exgo,
ReplyDeleteif the asshats that last boarded looked around and held the door for the person who was right behind them then I wouldnt have to shove my hand in to stop the doors from closing. They dont realize there is a world past the end of their noses.
if they want to inconvenience me by making me take the next elevator then I will do my best to inconvenience them whenever possible.
:)
I'm finding more and more than people are just lacking in basic, social graces. The world is becoming full of ignorant turds.
ReplyDelete"last lifeboat on the Titanic" HAHAHAHA
Al, Matt can't comment from work but he wants you to know it's good that the local narcissist (you) has chimed in.
ReplyDeleteBesides the fact that I am pure unadulterated awesomesauce, I do think it's shitty for someone not to be aware of when other people are around, such as holding doors as opposed to racing thru to be sure you dont have even touch the door.
ReplyDeleteWho the hell is Matt?
Al,
ReplyDeleteMatt wrote the pet peeve. He's also a regular, just like you.
He sits with the cool crowd. Other side of the train. LOL.
I am mildly claustrophobic and will get off elevators if they become uncomfortably full (and I don't mean more than two people or so - I mean crushing, pushing against me kind-of-full). I don't understand why people insist on entering a cramped elevator. I will wait for the next one (or the next, or even the one after that) to avoid feeling panicky. I've had to get off in a half-panic somewhere between my floor and the lobby if too many people pile on.
