CSAs are obligated (I'm pretty sure they're mandated) to remind passengers that smoking on station platforms at ANY time is prohibited.
Passengers don't deserve, nor should they be subjected to, second-hand smoke from other passengers while sitting on a train.

There was a full-on medical emergency (ambulance and everything) yesterday on the 15:43 LSW. We were stopped at Bronte for over 30 mins with the doors open. This woman decides it's a good time for a smoke break so she stands on the platform in front of the doors and lights up, causing all the smoke to waft right inside the train. I've got no balls so I just sat there and seethed. It does take a lot for some people to speak up so I'm not faulting Shirker for staying quiet. He's not being paid to 'police' passengers. It's not our jobs to ask people to butt out in shelters and on platforms. It's not my job to ask people to keep their dirty feet off the seats but I take it on because I'm fed up.
O well; some day it will all be illegal.
ReplyDeleteIn the CSA's defence, he was likely preoccupied with the ill passenger who ultimately had to be taken away on a stretcher.
ReplyDeleteTrue. That's true, but still ...
ReplyDeleteBut really, it was the passenger who lit up who's a tool.
@red handed
ReplyDeleteSmoking on station platforms is illegal.
I have been known to yell at GO platform smokers in the past! I say go for it, they know they're wrong anyways.
ReplyDeleteMay I suggest something as simple as pointing to the big "no smoking" signs they all ignore. You could really do this without even saying anything!
I agree, GO needs to get better at enforcing the rule. GO platform smoking is the absolute worst on an evening trip into the city.
I go further now and anyone who smokes near me no matter where it is, i tell them to move away and smoke somewhere else. About 50% apologise, the other 50% think you're trying to send them to a Death Camp.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the CSA, but it should be taken one step further. Had the CSA been busy with the ill person like someone mentioned, then some of the people inside the station should be monitoring the platform. They already do this/or I should say have the ability to do this with their CCTV system.
ReplyDeleteShirker! I didn't know you were an LSW'er! Maybe I've given you the evil eye before!
ReplyDeleteOh, and that chick is a douche for lighting up.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that, while CSAs like to think they are DJ's with their own personalities and ad libbing is part of their personal market branding, they take their messaging marching orders from GO and everyone needs to Let GO Know if they really want that "song" inserted into the CSA top 10 rotation.
ReplyDeleteUntil then mob rules apply and I'll back anyone up that wants to shout down a belligerent walking smoke stack.
I've encountered several in the last week, including one inside the train that I wasn't too happy with, myself.
I've seen GO bus drivers & train personnel smoking in non-smoking areas in Oshawa quite often...behind the buses, beside the train on the non-loading side.
ReplyDeleteJust this morning, this smoker with a hate on for me (I had the unmitigated gall to ask him to obey the bylaw) blew smoke in my face in the entrance to Oakville GO station. He's done this a few times. I think he waits for me. Well, its nice to have a hobby, I guess. I've complained to GO and got the royal run around any number of times. They are interested inpromising customer safety and comfort, but don't want to be bothered with the icky details of enforcing those promises, I suppose. I've had it.
