It's a damn shame

My post about people and their stuff resulted in a few emails from other passengers who also find it annoying to sit in a quad with one other person who claims the two other seats as their own. Equally aggravating for others are people who toss their garbage on the floor or don't collect their newspapers when they leave the train.

Please, let me share:

I blame GO for some of the mess. They took away the garbage bins and bins they had for newspapers on the platforms so people leave papers and garbage on the trains. GO also doesn't provide proper waste disposal methods on their trains. Those garbages are too tiny considering the volume of passengers. I'm not implying customers are in the right to throw stuff under their seats but if you don't provide waste cans, peeople are forced to be pigs.

Harry S. says:
This guy got on my train once at Exhibition in the summer carrying a box with a large pizza in it. He ate about half of it and then put the remainder on the seat opposite of him which was the seat beside me. He got off a couple of stops later and just left his pizza there. I was asleep and didn't see the pizza he left beside me until he was long gone. When I got off at my stop, this woman thought it was my garbage and she grabbed it and shoved it into my chest as I stood near the doors and yelled loudly for the whole train to hear that I should take my trash with me. This other guy says to her that it wasn't mine and the guy who was eating it left. You think I got an apology? Some people. I was so angered by that. I wanted to whip that box back at her.

  1. Well, Amy, that seems to be a roundabout way to blame GO for the garbage problem, instead of the people who can't hold on to it until they reach either the GO concourse at union or the individual station platforms (Ajax and others on the LSE have them on the PLATFORM).

The garbage fairies need to keep their crap in hand until they go down 1 freaking flight of stairs. That is not too much ask. They are adults or appear to be so.

  2. sorry... i'm not a regular commentator but i read every day... is this the same amy who started a fight with some of the regulars over the fact that she and her friends like to use the departure platform to board trains before those who wait on the correct platforms??? if it is, none of us should be surprised by her finger-pointing.

  3. Man alive, these people were never Boy Scouts or Girl Guides, obviously. We used to pack our trash back out with us if there wasn't any place to dispose of it while we were camping, hiking, etc.

I dropped my newspaper one night standing up and a woman politely pointed out to me I dropped it. I grabbed it up and took it with me.

People need to assume some personal responsibility with their actions. They want all kinds of rights and freedoms but none of the responsibility that goes with that. Makes me sick.

  5. I lived in Asia for a few years. In Seoul, trains and subways have overhead racks where people can deposit their newspapers for others to read. I asked my gf once why there was no garbage up there. She gave me one of those familiar patented loss-of-communication po-mo looks and replied "Why would there be garbage up there? Its for newspapers."

I once left an English language paper up there and waited and watched while a Korean guy came on the train, fished it out, then formed a pained expression as he realized that it was unreadable.

Garbage? Not so much. Spitting... well that's a different story...

  6. Hi Kim,
I think you are remembering this post (http://www.thiscrazytrain.com/2011/09/loves.html)

Only Amy above knows if it is her or not.

  7. What about those large chrome corner trash cans I see at the top of the first step of stairs?

Are those new or something that they're slowly removing?

  8. They have always been there. People who do not see them, don't want to see them.

  9. People who litter on the Go are the same a--holes who do it elsewhere ie. dropping gum wrappers on the street, kleenexs "conveniently" falling out of their pockets....etc. Sadly, It aint gonna change.

  10. Just a note, the reason why GO got rid of those garbage containers on the platforms is the same reason they got rid of the lockers that once used to be at Union....to prevent lunatics from deposting explosives into them....be thankful they have your safety at heart...bottom line is that ADULTS need to clean up after themselves...don't blame GO.

  11. There are people who litter anywhere and are just that kind of person. Walking on University Ave. down to Union one day I was shocked to see the guy in front of me eating from a yogurt container, only to finish it and fling it on the sidewalk. Wish I had said something but at the time I was just agape with shock at the nerve. I remember the 'no littering' being drilled into me at a young age and I often carry garbage in my coat pockets, purse etc. until I come across a bin, no matter how far - often it waits until I get home! what's the big deal?

  12. Harith - I find those cans actually very small and I've wondered how often they actually get emptied. They can fill up pretty quickly.
