Anyone else being robbed of 1 cent for your morning bus ride to the GO station?

If this pattern keeps up, GO will have earned an extra $2.00 from me by year-end.
Now multiply that by a 1,000 people.
We're no longer talking the price of a cup of coffee a day ... no "In the Arms of an Angel..." playin' here, son.

I decided to take a look at my Presto transactions history for this month. The yellow highlight is the cost for trip to the station. The green highlight is the cost for my trip home. I leave and return within the same zone.

My morning commute costs $8.40. My evening commute costs $8.39. GO Transit isn't collecting pennies here, so no need to round up. So why the 1 cent difference?

I called GO Transit. They said to call Presto. I called Presto and they said ... wait for it ... yep. Call GO Transit.

And transactions for the past two days:

  1. Maybe, after the loyalty discounts are factored in at the end of the month, it all works out?
What happened before the fare increase? Did you pay more in the morning.

  2. Nope. Always paid $8.01 in the morning and the same at night.

  3. Great, now I have that stupid song stuck in my head.

  4. Weird. My usage report shows consitent 8.39 transactions. Could it be due to a bus connection?

  5. I feel like Presto should just have a recording telling you to call go and vice versa, as that's all they ever seem to do when I call

  6. I do take the bus. That's where the Zone 95 comes in.
At night you can see -4.85 is deducted for the bus ride and then credited when I tap off.

The disconnect happens in the morning. GO takes away 1 cent more.

I don't really give a crap about the penny. It's the fact that it's not calculating correctly.

  7. I'm just guessing here.
Since Go operates on a Zone based fare it could be the Bus's Gps that's throwing the payment off ( depends on where the zone boundary for Zone 95 is related to the stop you tap off.)

For Example in Ottawa I tap onto a bus at Hurdman 2A where the bus thinks its at - HURDMAN 2B. (60 feet away)

  8. In terms of distance, the bus stop I board at in the morning is closer to the GO station, but I pay 1 cent more.
The bus stop I get off at when coming home is farther from the departure stop and the GO station and I don't pay a penny.

  9. Could be GPS related. Sure.
No one at GO can give me an answer.

  10. Another example of the boondoggle that is Presto. They clearly don't have all their ducks in a row.
