The rants, they comin' fast and furious

So the Quiet Zone initiative on the Lakeshore East is nothing more than a big steaming pile of poo. We're only three days in and according to Twitter and email, it's a big #fail.

I figured people were exaggerating, you know, because I want to give adults the benefit of the doubt and prove they can behave, but alas, listening to two hollering five year olds this morning, despite repeated announcements throughout the trip the upper level was the fucking shut up and let me sleep cabin, the parents were oblivious to the glares and ignored the CSA's pleas.

I didn't say anything. I'm tried of being the one always putting myself out there.

It also doesn't help that the on-board signage says BARRIE LINE ONLY. If a person is wearing headphones and playing music at a volume that can be heard from space, do you think they're going to realize the Quiet Zone applies to the train they're on? NOPE.

This money and energy being spent to enforce a quiet zone would be better served on a NO FOOT RIDING initiative. I can help design the stickers. I draw a pretty mean chainsaw.

  1. My normal morning train is pretty good. Always has been, but every once in a while you get one yahoo, whose voice carries, who thinks the world needs to know their issues.

Now this train hasn't had the stickers, only the announcements, so if someone is already in the middle of their tirade or headphones, whatever, they won't know about the new zone.

Plus (and I copied this from another post) I got to tell a woman to shut up this morning! Best part of the day!

Of course, she enters the coach and sits down, after the train has started moving and the announcement made. Talking on her cell phone so loudly that I could hear the profanity-laced tirade 5 quads away. No one needs to hear that the f'in pills messed with your f'in stomach at 6.45am.

Made the finger over the lips motion around Rouge Hill, when she finally looked up and around, mostly to see if she is making an impact. After that, complete silence.

    It was glorious.

And yes, there are others out there who do confront people, you are not alone. It just feels like you are because we are a minority.

  2. Kids like to ride on the top. Parents don't deny their children anything anymore. To hell with the other riders, their child should get what their child wants.

I don't know how many times I have listened to a child whine, rant or scream on the GO train for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes only to have the parents give in and give the child what would have shut them up in the first place. It wouldn't upset me so much if parents said no and stuck to it, but don't make me listen to your child scream for 30 minutes if you are just going to give in anyway.

  3. They should have designated whole cars not the upper level (this what I voted for). I do not like the quiet zone. The 16:10 is over capacity and now we have to be extra quiet if we can find a seat upstairs.

  4. @Dakota

When I received the quiet zone survey I voted for a quiet car at the ends of the train because sound travels and a quiet zone upstairs would not work.

  6. Ive been riding upstairs all week and not once has it been quiet. One guy last night was yapping on his phone for the first 20 minutes, another time 2 chicks behind me were babbling away non stop and wouldnt STFU either.
I might have to try the zipper lip next time I come across one of these schmucks.

  7. 5:02 LSW, Fourth Car from the front has been nice and silent. It was quite pleasant.

Sadly, the best A/C coverage is in those middle sections so I've ventured down looking for the sweet sweet coolness.

  8. There's a good solution for noisy children in the Quiet Zone, though it does involve being not so quiet yourself (and you need to be with someone).

Simply start a conversation involving a VERY adult topic, and make it colourful - hand gestures help get kids' attention. The conversation should be on a topic that involves words that will cause the child to ask a parent, "What's a XXXXXX?"

The sort of question that would make a parent, particularly one who lets their child run wild, to shit a square brick.

This should have them pack up their kid(s) and move before they start asking questions. ;-)

  9. On the 502 LSW two obnoxious twentyisomethings felt we all had to hear their super smart opinions on stocks. Got up and told them it was the QZ and i could hear them half a car away. They shut up. And another rider thanked me as I returned tp my seat.

  10. I think the Quiet Zone is a nice idea, but I agree that it should be in designated cars as well. It's hard enough to find a seat some days and now if you want to have a conversation you might have to stand or travel the entire train until you find one which is fine, but some people have specific cars they ride in as it's closer to the station parking lots.

Children like sitting on the top level. It's cool and fun! Heck so do I. I think it could have been better planned.
