You know your mama raised you right when ...

subject: CHIVALRY IS NOT DEAD!

In this selfish, inconsiderate, self-entitled world of foot and bag riders, I would like to share my experience this morning. I boarded a busy TTC train from St. Patrick's station at 8:57 am, you know, the standing room only trips. This young, very attractive male, not more than 28 years old stood up and offered me his seat. I was so stunned! I look about 29 myself (or so people tell me) and I thought WOW, what a gentleman. I can't remember the last time I felt like a lady, other than by my husband. For an older woman, yes I could understand, but me? So I chose to reply in a loud voice expressing how considerate he was and how appreciative I was. I politely declined the offer as he appeared to be tired and may have needed the seat more than I did.

I am happy and somewhat relieved to know that there are some young men in this world that have been raised properly and were taught how to be a REAL man.

I weep for the entitlement of today's youth.

Not too long ago I was at a gas station and on my way to pay inside when I saw a woman who appeared to be in her late-50's sauntering to the door as well. She wasn't limping, but she was clearly not moving at 100% (arthritis, perhaps?).

I sped up my gait slightly so to ensure that I could get to the door first. I opened it and held it for her to enter first. She was stunned, and thanked me profusely. Even buttoned it with "Such a nice young man; your mother would be so proud of you".

Made me feel good (partly for the recognition, partly because she called me "young"), but at the same time, I felt ashamed that so many men (of all ages) today have established a pattern of behaviour that makes it acceptable to be totally oblivious to others and doing something nice and/or considerate is now a rare occurence.

Such a reassuring story. It's good to know there are still decent men around.

Unlike the 30-something year old man on the 4:25 LSE to Oshawa yesterday afternoon (second car from front, sat in the middle section). He couldn't wait to light up that cigarette on the platform in Oshawa. My and my 32 week old fetus really enjoyed breathing in that smoke behind you, so thanks.

Women have turned themselves into competitors rather than companions. Chivalry is antiquated.

I'll give up my seat to the elderly or to a pregnant woman, and I'll hold a door for anyone, but I won't give up my seat to a woman merely because she has a different set of genitalia.

Should have asked him to a date

Hence why I was stunned. I would like to think it has nothing to do with genitalia but simply old fashioned classiness towards the mothers of this world. Perhaps he thought I was tired. Regardless, it appears that being chivalrus is not something you were taught nor believe in. To each his own...

With all due respect, expecting someone to give up their seat because you can't be bothered looking for a seat further down the coach OR on the next coach down the line is a little much.

I'd give my seat to anyone who seems to be labouring. But not to the person who just wanted a seat in the coach that stops close to where their car is parked.
