So... they shouldn't allow any over usage. If you can't take off from work 5-10 minutes earlier, to put money on your card ... not trying to be a dick, but adults gotta keep track of this. I know during the last week of a month to go buy my new pass, and I add 10 minutes to my travel time to do it. TTC rarely lets you on if you can't pay. (Have had one nice driver take me 12km to Finch so I could buy a pass.)
I've never run into a negative balance on my Presto card - not on purpose - this is key. I had a situation in 2012 where it took three days for a deposit on my card to load. I did not get charged for the underpayment as the 25 cent fee didn't exist then. I think the first offence should be forgiven. Especially if it's a load issue on their end. Look, if the system was perfect, the charge wouldn't irk me. But the system is flawed and considering I have yet to see my $4.74 overpayment be credited to me for the year long fare skimming I was subjected to, I'm not a fan of the service charges. I don't mind paying a service charge with my bank for overdraft protection because my bank hasn't let me down or stolen from me. My insolence stems from mistrust. But I do understand the points you and M have made. If Presto was better operated, I wouldn't come across as such a bitter bitch.
The 0.25 fee has existed fro a long time. I am almost sure I got stuck with an overdraft in 2012, and I tried to add funds to the card at my destination station, they told me i would have to tap off as they could not add funds to an open trip. the tapp off caused an oer draft and I was then told I would be charged 0.25 for the overdraft.
I have used it a couple times and actually find it very convenient when i forget to reload (always at a teller, never autoload or online load).

If you go even $0.01 over draft on your bank... you pay for it. I believe it's $5 or more. This is not bad.
Presto is still not a bank

I'm glad it's convenient for folks. It's good it's there.
