For those wanting to know, the packing is never-ending. It took three days to do the kitchen (including cleaning the appliances). My fridge was a DISASTER.
I am leaving behind the whitest kitchen and the whitest appliances - ever (and the cleanest - I did my Eastern European mother proud this weekend). I will also miss it. The kitchen is huge in this home - 12 by 14 feet - with a butler pantry. I'm moving into a home where the kitchen is open to the family room. It will be an adjustment. I liked being able to hide in the kitchen - LOL.
My hands are so dry from using so much VIM cleanser that the skin is peeling. This can't be good but I just can't leave behind a filthy house.
Just briefly, the first home I bought in Oshawa was left in such a state of disarray, disrepair and filth, that I carried so much resentment in my heart for years afterwards. It wasn't until we renovated it and sold it, did that resentment ever dissipate. I swore I would never do that to another home buyer -- what the people who left that home did to us. Never, ever.
So packing is going well. It does feel never-ending. The big move is Friday. I'll see if I can pop in an update. Wish me luck!

I do not envy you. Thankfully, the house we moved into, the sellers had it professionally cleaned for us, including the rugs. We were so touched that we dropped off a Keg Gift card for them at their real estate agent's office. There are good people in the world and then there are shits, and I really wonder how they sleep at night.
ReplyDeleteThat's a class act FRED, by you and the seller. I haven't been so lucky but I too would never leave a house dirty.
ReplyDeleteGood luck CJ! hope everything goes smoothly
Good for you - that's the way it should be and your mother would be proud.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on Friday and don't forget to get some sleep!
My wife runs a cleaning business where she is paid by the realtors to clean homes prior to move-in by the new owners. Everybody loves it; she is paid well, realtors come out smelling like roses, and the homeowners are appreciative of having a clean home to move into.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, I'm surprised more people/realtors don't have this type of arrangement.
I think if I wasn't closing on the same day on both houses, I could have worked something out. The woman I bought my new home from is related to people who own a cleaning service. We did the walkthrough Sunday, the place is more immaculate than Church. I am VERY pleased.
ReplyDeleteI hear you! We moved into our house just over a year ago and I'm STILL trying to scrub dirt (and things I refuse to identify) off the walls left from the former owners... If I did that, my mother would have scolded me so bad...
ReplyDeleteI know who to call if I ever sell my place! ;o)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you KM. I washed half a wall and the water in my bucket was black. My hubby came home and said "oh! You washed the walls" I'm still peeved about it! I had the contact info for the previous tenant...they got a very nasty email from me...one apartment I rented had bodily fluids on the walls. Had to push back the move in date by a month because I was not dealing with that!
ReplyDeleteMy first house (well present) was so dirty, garbage was piled in corners, maggots were under the sink and the fridge. Shudder. It was so bad, that the grime in the oven ate through the element.
ReplyDeleteI cried. I really did. My parents were so proud, that we did dinner as a family, then went to check things out. Ended up having to break into the garage because they locked me out. In fact, they never actually finished moving out. The garbage-people were busy for months with me throwing out the stuff. Sad thing is: 5 years later, I am still packing up the stuff and dealing with it.
Remember, nothing is as bad as that. You do your mother proud.
Happy Moving!
I remember moving from Hamilton. I was commuting and working 12 hour days and doing some travelling so my poor wife was left to juggle 3 kids, school, daycare, nappies and pack for the new place and try to tidy the old place. She left a clean house but with some old cushions and curtains and odds and ends left behind and a pile of garbage on the lawn ready for the next pick up. The new owners went ballistic screaming at my missus and making her cry. I think, so long as you get rid of the grime and just do your best that's all you can do. Moving into a model home smelling of VIM and cookies would be nice but it ain't always possible :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
Bit late for CJ, but worth sharing with everyone else: If you don't like using VIM or cleaning stuff generally, use white vinegar (in a spray bottle for preference). Get rid of pretty much anything, and you don't have to worry about any residue from the cleaner itself.
ReplyDeleteP.S: Hope the move goes/has gone well!
ReplyDeleteWe are in the new house but due to unfortunate circumstances, we now own 2 houses. I've spent my entire vacation on this move. I really hope this is settled by Friday. I don't have the mental bandwidth for this.
ReplyDeleteMy realtor had my kitchen cleaned, inside of cupboards etc. for us before we moved in as a gift. It was awesome to be able to go in and put stuff away right away without cleaning. Now Cindy - VIM! argh! Please, please think of me and my 2 cute beagles and consider going cruelty-free. Method products work and smell great! Tell me any product you use and I'll give you a replacement one. Just think about it. Beagles are the #1 breed used in testing.
ReplyDeleteI've used my last bottle of that stuff! Vinegar, baking soda and elbow grease are my new besties!
