The area where I grew was on limestone, with random caves underneath. On one memorable occasion, the drilled a hole for a new hydro pole, lowered it in with a crane, detached the crane hook... and the pole promptly dropped so only a foot was left above the ground. Clearly, there was a cave somewhere down there...
