Having moved from Toronto to London I now work for London Underground and while not in the Lost Property Office, I have heard stories and do pass by there to catch the Tube on occassion. They have a great window display of lost property relics from days gone by! Typewriters, old cell phones etc. A colleague had a placement at the office and said they even had a coffin. How that happens I'll never know. Apparently there was also a well known 'customer' who would never buy an umbrella and instead come in claiming they 'lost' one every so often when they needed one - they always have a ton of unclaimed ones (something like >10,00/yr) and if you say you lost a black one you're bound to be in luck!
