Residents demand parking restriction to combat GO commuters
At the root of the problem is overflow parking from GO commuters, an issue that has been a long-standing problem in the area but, more immediately, the impact recent parking restrictions around Town Park approved by Council have had on the on-street parking situation.
“We have been doing this for 10 years,” said Derek Rundle. “We were patient when you built the first parking lot, and then they tore down the barns and built the second parking lot and we were patient then. Then you built the parking structure and we have been enduring – well, I can’t say the word.
“Let’s get this straight – there is a real hatred for the GO people in our area. It is pure hatred because they are so ignorant. We have been doing this for 10 years. All we want is three hour parking in our area. They are parking in our areas just for pure convenience. They don’t want to take their BMWs, Mercedes and everything else into [the parking garage] and get them scratched. Just put up signs to stop parking in our area. It is a simple solution that has nothing to do with Metrolinx. It has to do with the Town’s looking after the people. That is why Rob Ford was so popular. That is why Donald Trump is so popular. They listen to the people.”

Wow - they get very excited don't they? Maybe he plays with matches? I don't see what the big deal is - put a 3 hour parking limit sign up for 9-5 and problem solved (you won't find a residential street in Toronto that doesn't have the same restriction).
ReplyDeleteI get their point. It may be dramatic, but they are frustrated. After 10 years, things have just gotten worse.
ReplyDeleteFor starters, GO train commuters should not be street parking. Especially if lots and garages are provided.
3 hour parking is an easy thing for the city to do. Plus, if it is enforced, then think of the revenue. Win-win!
I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that ON taxpayers built these people are parking garage and they don't use it. Meanwhile, in Oshawa...
ReplyDeleteThey do use it. There's just an overflow. Aurora has people driving from Richmond hill and other places because their go train lines are bad. Obviously this creates a parking problem. This resident is way overly dramatic because parking isn't such a big deal in this area at all... as soon as they started talking about rob ford and Donald trump I think their opinion should have been disregarded because either were/are far from being popular with people who are not idiots.
DeleteThey should just tow the offending vehicles. Some feel a parking ticket is a small price to pay for convenience.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness they're finally building a parking structure at Oshawa. The current state of things is pretty nuts. The newest surface lot is so far west it's literally in Whitby, but the only access to the train is walking all the way around it from the east end (heaven forbid they put in tunnels or bridges so that there are multiple access points to the train like every other damn station!) So if you ride in the west end of the train, you've got a 1.25km walk from car to train. Even at a brisk 5km/h pace, that's a 15 minute walk! I like my exercise but I would sure like those extra 15 minutes to sleep in the morning.
ReplyDelete@G: What parking structure at Oshawa? The construction they're currently doing is to build a shiny new GO/VIA station - it's not for parking. What news have you heard? Do tell!
ReplyDeleteAs part of the Oshawa rehab, the new west parking lot will have tunnel access direct to the platform. It will just be part of a later phase.
ReplyDeleteSo whatever is wrong with what this guy is saying?
ReplyDeleteIt's a simple matter of him wanting his promised designated space to not be invaded by uninvited outsiders with "free passes" to use said space(s) any way they choose.
What, in any way, is so "unethical" about him getting so unglued over this matter?
It appears none of you are Aurora residents, we park on the street because there is no room in the lot (yes, even with our multi level garage). The residents quoted in this article are ignorant to that issue. I want to park on their Street about as much they want me there. We used to park in a public space but since the town has restricted parking there we are on the street.
ReplyDeleteHence, Mr. Morrison, you park on the street out of default.
ReplyDelete(That is, you're never given any real choices.)
