I still have some tearoff tickets that were used before the POP system. You put one half in a bin when you got on the train and the other half when you got off the train.
The memories of crowded silver cars, hugely uncomfortable seats and a very high first step onto the car and then a corresponding jump down off the car are still strong.
Per http://www.gotransit.com/public/en/fares/fareinfo.aspx, section "Refunds & exchanges", subsection "Unused GO 2-ride and 10-ride tickets", "GO 2-ride and 10-ride tickets were discontinued on August 1, 2012." The option to convert the ticket balance to PRESTO was "available until December 31, 2015".

I had extra rides on a 10 ride ticket and I got a credit applied to my Presto. Not sure they'll still do that four years later, though. Worth a shot!
