Horrible news out of New Jersey today
A crowded commuter train plowed into the bustling Hoboken station during the morning rush hour Thursday, killing at least one three people and injuring more than 100 others, some critically, in a tangle of broken concrete, twisted metal and dangling cables, authorities said.

ReplyDeleteIf you had carefully read what people were concerned about, you would have learned that derailment, crashes, natural disasters and terrorist attacks are very real concerns GO commuters have, and how prepared the agency we pay good money to, really is to respond to these situations. When they can't make a timely, concrete decision to push or pull a dead train to a station, it makes you wonder what would happen in a derailment.
The compensation was a goodwill gesture to compensate passengers for their time. Some people had to arrange for cabs. Some people had to pay late daycare pickup fees that averaged $1 for every minute late. Some people had to pay no show fees for missed appointments. And others just wanted some recognition that we were literally held hostage for no real good reason. Bad planning? Bad decisions? Who knows?
Yes, we made it all home safe, but it's cold comfort when you look at a crash like this and realize it can happen on GO, and you have no idea what the response would be.
And one last thing, you can stuff your asshole comment, where the sun don't shine.

Seeing this scares me to death. With the speeds of the express trains of the GO train and VIA trains go, it makes you wonder if it's possible to happen here :( Stay safe everyone!

ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but since you, (or someone), pointed out the police presence in union I seem to fixated on this. The platforms are really well patrolled, (during rush hour anyway).
Encouraging to see the proactive approach, sad that it is necessary.
Yes we should stop complaining about everything forever because at least we're still alive...What could possibly go wrong?

ReplyDeleteWith all the cutbacks in government funds and all the lay-offs of long-term employees I can't help but wonder if all this "bottom-line" approach isn't having adverse effects on the systemic ecosystems of these government-funded public services.
